Creative brainstorming lesson

Our brainstorming class was fun (Fig.1). Abrar our EAP lecturer (a very pleasant lady) took us in the art of brainstorming. A few exercises made the class very lively and interactive.

I learned a lot from this class. Especially new ways of brainstorming, coming up with ideas and recording one’s ideas. As I do have a habit of forgetting ideas that spring up in my head. You get a eureka moment and suddenly, it’s gone. This can be very frustrating.

The class watched a Ted talk video on how to be creative or like I say, “how to get your creative juices going”. The speaker’s name is Marily Oppezzo (Fig.2) and her talk title is ‘Want to be more creative? Go for a walk’. The 5 mins 26 seconds video was worth it and very informative. Going for a walk was the advice given by the speaker to be creative and voice record one’s ideas. In truth, this works. I tried this during the weekend, and it was very practical. Writing down my essays I did use this recording to fill out the ideas needed to expand my work. I would have forgotten this if I said I will try to remember it or write it down on some piece of paper.

We were also introduced to different research methods.  research. Which is a detailed study of a subject, analyzing information, starting with a topic to explore or a question to answer. 5 research steps, were explained in brief their steps explained, Step 1, defining issues, and problems, what type of task or activity? What am I studying or what answers am I looking for? Step 2, create a plan on how you can solve the problem and how to proceed in getting the necessary information needed. Step 3, collect the data, even record your findings, voice notes, write the down, add captions, few sentences in your own words. Step 4 is understanding and examining your findings. And step 5, reporting our research and findings. Other different methods of brainstorming ideas using: WHAT? WHO? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? and HOW? Also, the importance of analysing our sources using C.R.A.A.P (Currency, Relevance, Author, Accuracy, Purpose).

We also did an exercise in brainstorming on the last outing we did. (Sutton, Sound Lounge trip). Using our 5 senses in our experience we were a group of 3 and we came out with the below sketch up.
